I'm considering going back to school to get a drafting certificate or
an architecture degree but heard rumors of drafting jobs being
off-shored to non US contries. Does anyone know if there is a trend in
the industry to off-shore work? I come from a software development
background where a lot of the work now goes to Asia or Eastern Europe.
Thanks,
Alex

I have been in the industry for some time now. Due to liability factors in the industry, comapnies would not choose to go outside of there building code requirement areas. I'm based in toronto, ontario and the provincial government has introduced a by-law stating that anybody who acts as designer, has to have a provincial certification to be able to submit drawings for permits. if it is the same in the U.S., chances are companies willnot do that due to the fact that asian and eastern europe drafting personel are not certified and qualified under north american building codes.

It would be way to hard to farm out most of the drafting/designing work to other countries. Just think of the time differences, those alone would put you back days (unless you talked the engineers to stay really late or come in really early) plus the designs that are gov't controlled are not allowed to be in any foriegn hands so. just those reasons alone are enough to stop all that farming out nonsense.
