ACAD 2k and WinxP 64-bit Editiion |
|
|
I'm just building a new machine around the 64 bit AMD processor. Has anyone
yet installed ACAD 2000 under the beta of WinXP 64-bit Edition. The readme
cautions against trying to install any applications that use 32-bit kernel
level drivers, does ACAD do this. I'm no great fan of XP but would like the
benefits of a 64-bit OS to match the processor.
TIA

what are the benefits besides using more than 4GB RAM (do you have
them)?

Haven't tried Autocad, but Microstation works fine on XP 64-bit.
With a 32-bit progam, you do get the use of 4GB RAM, instead of about
1.7GB with XP-32bit.

There are lots of discussion about running 32 bit apps on a 64 bit OS. It is |
not as efficient and consumes additional memory. It is like running 16 bit
apps on 32 bit OSes. The 16 bit apps must use an emulator of sorts to
communicate with the 32 bit OS. Google WOW (windows on windows) and thunking
for more info.
I plan to wait until more of our common apps are issued in 64 bit vers
before adopting. It seems a bit early now.

We have one computer running LT2004 on "real" WinXP 64 here. No
problems or crashes yet.
If there are problems they would be (1) that R2000 came out before XP,
and R2000 isn't officially supported on any version of XP, and (2) using
a beta of XP 64. You might want to check when the beta times out -- it
would be a bad thing to walk in one morning and find that your OS had
shut down.
