License Server Crash Recovery |
|
|
I will soon install and configure the NLM for AutoCAD 2004 on one PC. If my license server dies, how do I get the NLM up and running on another PC? Important note: Swapping NICs is not possible, because my PCs have network interfaces integrated into the motherboard.

The easiest way is to install the LM twice. Go ahead and get the license
codes for both servers. Then DO NOT start the service on the second machine.
It's easy enough to start the service if/when you need it.
You'll want to verify this with your Reseller obviously, but I'm pretty sure
this is a common.

Are you shure? When I transered the lm to naother server I had to sign
papers from autodesk that the old one would't be in use anymore. So do you
get a second code?

Re: License Server Crash Recovery |

At the risk of calling in the dogs....
Up until about 2 weeks ago, I had two installations of Flex on my network. I
had considerably fewer licenses on the older one, and the service was
stopped. I did not get new auth codes every time I added a seat. About every
6 months, I would sign on to the website and generate a new license file
with the current number of licenses using the old server name/MAC. I copied
this to the old server and it sat there. If I had need, I could start up
that server, tell users to copy a file to their local installations, and
they would have all pulled from the older server. DO NOT read this as having
two sets of licenses available at any time. The service was available if I
needed.
Now, in our case, since the LM server is the data server it's kind of
silly-if I can't get to the data, what's it matter if I can get a license.
For others where the LM is separated from the data, this could be a godsend.
It's so easy to generate lic files, why not give yourself some insurance?
Licensing schemes keep honest people honest, this isn't meant to cheat that.
For real insurance, look at distributed servers, etc. Call your reseller if
you really want to look into it. It's their job to deal with it!
