We have a CAD computer here at work that is getting a little outdated
and I was hoping that the experienced AutoCAD community could help me
out with recommendations for new hardware and software. Here is the
configuration for the current CAD machine:

Pentium 4 1.6 GHz
512 MB RAM
Windows 98SE (Yeah, I know...)
ATI Rage 128 Pro video card w/ 32 MB video memory

Any recommendations for CPU type, amount of memory, type of video card,
operating system, etc.? Thanks!

Sean

A better video card, WinXP, and perhaps more RAM would do wonders for the
remaining hardware on that one PC, no need to buy much more. It's not too
bad a system, considering you only got R2000 or 2000i, it' just choked with
Win98 and the cute game card.

A memory upgrade (1024 MB, for example) and upgrading the OS to XP are
easy enough to do. Any particular recommendation for the video card
(brand, model, etc.)? Thanks for your reply, by the way.

NVidia based cards are popular: hardware discussion area as well as the
digitize-display discussion areas both cover recommendations often. No need
to waste money on 256MB type card though ;)

I have a personal computer with the Architectural Desktop 2 and have an edition to Autocad 2005 but my computer won't let me install it. Is there a specific problem other than my pc having windows 98 (first ed)? These are its characterstics: Windows 98
Pentium 3 600 MHZ
30 GB ultra dma hard drive
128 MB SDRAM memory

Are there any specific updates and where can find them?

No more Win98, time to bury it. You can't have 2005 with it/
And 128MB Ram is way too low for anything.

Time to by a WinXP machine.

HI:

I am running AutoCad 2000 3D on a Windows 2000 Pro and CYGWIN Unix emulation system. (Not running AUTOCAD in Unix yet.) I am running Visual Basic 6, MS Office 2000, and a few other programs like a music editor program called COOL EDIT 2000.

We have two systems with a D-Link KVM switch for the monitor, mouse, and keyboard.

I am also on a D-Link Wireless network, with 256 bit encryption set.

The system is a Celeron 700, 40GB HD Primary, 15 GB HD Secondary, 384 MB SDRAM, DVD, CDR-Writer, nVidia 64 MB graphics card, and a Daytek 17" monitor.

I am using a LEXMARK X-75 print/copyer/scanner for my basic ploting.

I have not noticed a lag in my 3D drawing regeneration or updates, but I am not running a business either.

When I had my computer business, several of my business customers were running AutoCAD on a lot less.

Tony
