What's the best way to put part of a Microstation (J) drawing into a Word
document? Thanks

Use EMF for MicroSoft packages such as PowerPoint, Word and so forth.
Use JPG for just about everything else.
To create the best quality image (EMF and/or JPG) use MicroStation's
plotting (File > Print/Plot) and select either the emf or jpeg plot drivers
rather than the one you normally use.
By the way, you may find Bentley's discussion groups of interest. Over there
you can meet other users of Bentley products, exchange ideas, and discuss a
wide

JPG is good but I don't know about using it "for just about everything else". High contrast, low colour depth, raster images that you get from CAD files are just not what JPG was designed to compress and as a result you can get some pretty unsightly ghosting and compression artefacts along high contrast edges. Using 'Deflate' compressed TIFF images I find that I get perfect reproduction and a file that is considerably smaller than what you get from JPG. I use ACDSee to convert my TIFF images so they use 'Deflate' compression.
