Any CAD Salesmen around here? |
|
|
Hi - I am an engineer with a strong desire and knack for sales. There are a
lot of companies looking for people to sell 3d alike Pro-e etc. the moment.
I have so many questions I don't know where to start. If anyone has any
experience at all - as a salesmen or dealing with them and Cad products
please let me know. Market outlook, ease of sales, competition, etc.

I was an 'authorized reseller' of various CAD and related products during
the early 90's and have some tips.
* Smaller vendors are unethical and will steal your customers given any
opportunity to do so.
* Customers in the A/E/C markets will buy one license and steal 10 and then
turn around and threaten you with no work or hold back earned fees if you do
not support the pirated software.
* The larger vendors only provide squeeky thin margins for resellers but as
a rule -- can be -- more trustworthy and -- can -- provide more marketing
materials and support. Becoming an authorized reseller for Autodesk for
example would not likely be possible any more due to their demanding
requirements. Furthermore, Autodesk is pond scum and sh!ts on their
resellers.
If you insist on this endeavor working for an established reseller would be
a very wise move. At least for a temporary look-see into that side of the
business.

Wow - thanks for the input.
Very sobering indeed. How would you qualify a large resellor? One that has
been in business since 1994, offers training centers etc?
Also, if I may ask what was the volume of sales per typical year in dollars?
What would a salesman expect as a total compensation?
Thasnk for the tips -

Why or how is it unethical? You don't own your customers. They can go where
they please. If the small vendor is doing something unethical to gain your
customers then I can agree. But taking customers away is not unethical in
and of itself. It is competition. To make a blanket statement, "small
vendors are unethical", is wrong.

Not any longer. Most software is now protected and must be activated with
some form of encrypted key code.

By large I would refer to a company such as 3Com for whom I was an
authorized Small Business Networking Partner Program.
Compensation is too varied for me to respond to your last question other to
say a more meaningful answer would be to refer you to VAR Magazine. In fact,
one of my strategies included getting on as many free periodical
subscriptions as possible. One you get a couple of two or three
authorizations they start calling you and asking you if you want to recieve
their trade journals. All advertising driven and free to qualified
subscribers.
Do you think I could sell an e-book for $12.50?

On several occassions, with different vendors, events such as the one I now
relay when discussing trade shows is a good example of how some vendors will
try to steal customers.
If you paid for the booth in a trade show, and you brought the furniture and
you set the booth up and the vendor simply flew his rep to work your booth
and after the event your customers told you they were being cold called
because the rep was taking your customer's business cards from the fishbowl
then that would be stealing your customers.
If I was your partner and took you and your wife out for beers and you
yelled at her and made her leave but when you went to work the next day I
went over to your house and she let me f*ck the hell out of her because I
let her cry on my shoulder then that would be the same thing.
Do you get it now?

Certainly unethical.

*SOME* vendors are unethical, but not all. You made a blanket statement
about small vendors: *Smaller vendors are unethical and will steal your
customers given any opportunity to do so.* This seems to indicate that you
group all small vendors as unethical. Had you said, *SOME small vendors...*,
I can agree with that.
Some or a few small vendors or, perhaps, any size vendor could attempt that,
but to say ALL small vendors is unfair and inaccurate.
I run a small business unrelated to CAD. I could pull these unethical stunts
towards my competitors, but I don't, I just give my customers the good
service they deserve.
