It means the license file was deleted. Read the FAQ about what changes to
your PC may cause your license to break:
http://www.autodesk.com/activation
Typical examples would be reformatting your hard disk and reinstalling the
OS, or restoring a partition image from a backup that doesn't have the
license file in it.
If this is a training lab or other situation where frequent restores are
required, the network license may be a better fit for you. If you indicate
which version of AutoCAD it is, I can tell you where the license file is
located.

this is still a big amount of down time. what is the quickest way to
resolve the issue? what can i do to ensure against future failures?
stand alone lisences are in place and this problem has occured at leat 10
times. (10 days down time!)
