I just wanted to let you guys/girls know if some issues I've encountered
after installing Microsoft's KB885835 patch. We keep our AutoCAD menus and
startup routines on a shared drive on the network. In our configuration,
each is that each time an AutoCAD session is launched, the standard menu's
load. This is done to maintain some standardized stuff in out company.
Anyway, after installing KB885835, AutoCAD would lockup upon reading the
menus, and then finally load after a minute of so. Once the AutoCAD session
is fully loaded, then other drawings (within the same session) load fine.

Uninstalling the patch solved the problem.

The is a Kernel level patch, so that may have something to do with it. Here
is the link to the patch information:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-044.mspx

If anyone has heard of a "fix" for this issue other than removing the patch,
please let me know.

Thanks,
Sam

And, as I mentioned in the 2005 ng, I don't have a problem with that patch,
and an apparently similar setup. Other than our network version of 2005
being installed after the security patch on XPsp2 and Win2000.

So I would tend to think something else may be at work here than just the
security patch.

I also have every service pack known to man installed and haven't personally
seen the problem.

I tend to believe it has something to do with the Digital Signature
functionality... Its been known to slow down acad startup and even browsing
dwg files in explorer. Try disabling it using "UNICON.REG". Search for
UNICON in the knowledge base... The solution is for NT/2004, but it works
for any version.

Also, have you tried with the XP firewall OFF and Virus Protection off?

Some menus also dynamically load a MENU.DLL file which stores toolbar
images. Antivirus apps could be scanning the file a bit too aggressively.

I have most - but not all of the custom menus with the toolbar BMP's in
image DLL's.

They are a little slower to drop down than in 2000i. But there is no hang
with them. I tend to think the image spec size changed.

But I don't see an antivirus issue here with the image DLL's that I can
tell.
