I'm with you! I want to get a new system too, to run Pro/e. I'm thinking $3000
should get me a system that's up to the demands Pro/e places on one. I'm also
thinking that between 40-50% of the cost of a successful machine will be spent on
a graphics card, say, an nVidia Quadro 1000 or 1500. Pro/e loves these cards and
they completely support OpenGL, the Pro/e graphics standard. Anything less is
asking for trouble. Anything more just helps the cause.
A good MoBo is essential and so is a good hard drive, but, for speed, reliability
and stability, graphics is, ROI, top of the list.
If you have a fairly decent gaming machine, there's no harm wondering how it will
do with 3D vector graphics, such as is used in Pro/e. No harm in trying it out,
taking it around the block, peeking under the hood. But, if we're serious here,
we're not reinventing the wheel. The trials have been done, the results are in:
gaming cards are out for Pro/e; for professional 3D modelling software, you need
the good stuff. Don't go cheap on this, it'll only cause you grief and pain.
FX5200 ~ use at your own risk!

This is pretty annoying, as the basic hardware is much the same, but the
full openGL implementation is lobotomised on the games cards. You may be
able to get your hands on bios updates for a games card to switch it back
on, but you are in uncharted territory.

You can get an Nvidia FX500 for $250 shipped, brand new in the package.
This is what the company I work for uses.
We also use P4 3.4 ghz dells with a min of 1 gig RAM because we work with
monster models.
Good luck
