Does anyone here do any coding "on the side"?
If so, how do you charge for the work... by program or by line of code??
How much do you charge??

I'm just trying to get a feel for what's a good $$$ amount.

I typically look at a project as a whole and calculate the total number
hours to complete. I multiply the number of hours by my hourly rate per,
then give a not to exceed price. If I spend less time on the project than
estimated, then the client pays less. If it takes longer than I thought, I
make less per hour. I take extra care, before starting, to document
everything that is expected. This is so I can charge for any changes by the
client (unless they are easy and/or the client is nice to work for). If I
work at the client site with someone watching and questioning everything I
do, then I charge $120/hour. If I work at the client site with normal
interruptions, I charge $100/hour. If I work at my office and the client
calls me often or talks too long, I charge $100/hour. If I work at my office
and the client doesn't constantly bug me, I charge $80/hour.
Small jobs are the hardest to price. Sometimes it takes longer to find out
exactly what the client wants, than the time it takes to do the programming.
Most clients don't want to pay for your "talking" time, so there is a fine
line when charging. You typically have to bite the bullet on the first
project for a new client until you find out how easy or hard they are to
work with.

I've tried several different profit models for Acad tools.

for an hourly rate, I'm pretty happy with $50/hour, though Admin costs always kill you (probably in every business). Because of that, for a lot of tool programming, I charge a $150 minimum, which comfortably covers the many emails that every tool necessitates.

For several years, I've been experimenting with the Low Cost You Suggested It cost model. if people suggest a tool idea, I'll code it and throw it up on the web site for sale (http://liftedaxis.com), only charging the person something like $10 -- the model assumes that additional sales will recoup the initial time investment.

Whenever I need to work with my lawyer for updates to the license agreement or on a source code dispute, I must admit I get jealous about his $400/hour rate. But then again, we get all the chicks....
