I've inserted an xref into a drawing. it's using some centerline linetypes,
but the object linetype for the most part is continuous. But in one drawing
that I'm referencing the xref, i want the linetypes to display as hidden.
Can i do that some how without changing the linetype in the original xref?

You can change the linetypes of the xref from within the host drawing
through the Layer Properties Manager.

Highlight the xref's layer(s) and then change the linetype to "hidden".
If
the "hidden" linetype is not in the list, then you must load it into the
host drawing. This linetype change will only appear in the host drawing.
It will not affect the original xref drawing.

Be sure your VISRETAIN variable is set properly or you will lose
these changes when you close your Acad session.
