2x4 and pipes... |
|
|
In all the tutorials I have seen, there is mention on how to draw lines, squares,... but
Is there a way to just tell AutoCAD to "simply" draw a 2x4 or a pipe, rather than having to build one reach time?

The assumption here is that you mean a 2x4 - as in what you purchase from a lumber company. Or a pipe, such as what
you would purchase at your local hardware store.
Without special "add-on" software or lsp routines, the answer is NO. Autocad can't read your mind - you have to lead
it by it's "hand". |

Draw one & make a block or a wblock out of it then insert it where you need
to.

Explore BLOCK command: pick up a basic drafting in AutoCAD book and explore
basic functions for symbols and blocks and more.

Remember that a 2x4 is not 2"x4" and that pipe size is nominal not actual
for the smaller (12" and under) sizes just like 8" cmu is 7 5/8" thick.

Warren, I believe structural pipe sizes use actual inside diameter, but
outside diameter is a function of wall thickness. Because it was adopted
from plumbing pipe. For instance a 3 1/2" SWP is 3 1/2" inside w/ 1/4" wall
thickness, for an outside diameter of 4". For structural purposes the
various wall thicknesses relate to bearing capacity and stiffness but were
originally designed to resist fluid pressure. |

After you get a library of many blocks you can customize AutoCAD so you have
easier access to your blocks.
You can create menu pulldowns, icon libraries, buttons etc... There is no
end to what you can accomplish.
With a little experience you can automate AutoCAD to change layers before
you insert your block so the blocks
are on the layer you wish or automatically scale a block for you.... man I
could go on and on...
It is a little time consuming at first but very gratifying.

I believe what you are looking for with the 2x4 is the "box" command. You
have to specify the dimensions of your 2x4 (1.5x3.5x96, etc) but it will
then treat the box as a board instead of a series of lines. You will have
to manipulate your UCS to draw boards on angles or draw them in the othro
dimensions and then rotate the boards in to position. To cut your boards,
use the "slice" command. Look up 3D drawing techniques.
