Opening Excisting Files - builds slow |
|
|
Anybody ever experience a problem when going to the file/open screen in
Solid Works Office. The file's icon builds slow and you have to wait
until all the file's icons are imaged before you can select a file to
open. When you have the details on, it doesn't appear that the file
size determins which ones load slower then another.
I just loaded SW on a new Dell 870 precision with 3 G of Ram and a 3.6
G Xeon. On our old CAD PC this doesn't happen. This happens on both of
our new Dells.
The files are loading from a very respectable server. The bandwidth is
also not a problem.
Once the file's icons are refreshed, the files open faster then did on
the old PC. This seems to work the same in Solid Works explorer too.
All the SW 2006 and WinXP files are up to date as far as I know. Our SW
Tech support doesn't have an answer.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Dan

Tools --Options -- System Options tab -- General --uncheck "show thumbnail
graphics in Windows Explorer"
When the above is off your computer does not try to read the image inside
each & every stinking file & just shows the generic symbol for part,
assembly, & drawing.
You can still see the thumbnail in widows explorer when you expand the
"details" window to the left after selecting an individual file
Hope that helps.

so the generic icons are slow? Does it happen in windows or just the
solidworks open dialog box?

just drawing at straws here -- but what add ins do you have turned on? Do
you use pdmworks? Try turning some of them off (one at a time -- checking
the open dialog -- then turn off another one) maybe that will track down
the culprit
I have also seen a slow down in other areas when the task pane is thumb
tacked down ( visible all the time ) -- is your expanded when browsing?
if it is faster in windows -- how are your files listed? details, thumbs,
list, small, or large icons? compare the windows setting to that of
solidworks in the open dialog box & make them the same to see if that makes
a difference.
If I think of anything else I'll try posting more questions to help lead to
the right direction

I was just informed by our CAD guy that windows explorer has the same
issue. I thought I was getting good results from WE yesteday. It was
suggested to delete the file association to the .sldprt file type and
then reassociated it. I'm still working on your resolution path and
this path.
I'll keep you posted.
