I've had need on several occasions to export a bitmap (or any other
readily recognisable image format) image to send via e-mail. When I
export the bitmap using the function in AutoCAD (Land Developement
Desktop II) it saves it as a bitmap but not any format of bitmap that
I can get any Image reader to open.
Is there a way to export a regular average everyday bitmap or not?

You should have better luck by 'plotting' to the desired image format.

I often use psout to export dwg images from cad as follow:
1. Type in cmmddia and set the value to ''0''
2. Type in filedia and set the value to ''0''
3. Type in psout
5. Set the file name or choose default
6. Choose what to plot and follow command prompt
7. In the display box for preview use default
8. Chose default size ''I'' for inches ''M'' for millimeters
9. Set scale to default or user units
10. Set output size or use default
12. Reset cmddia value to ''1''
13. Reset filedia value to ''1''
11. Reopen with illustrator and save again in eps
12. From eps you have the possibility to save again in ai or as pdf or
export to other print and or extension you need

I'd suggest that you look into PDFs. Almost everyone has a reader by now.
I understand that there are free applications out there that will make them
for you,
although I use Adobe Acrobat.

It also depends on what level of quality you require.
When I save as a bitmap, from AutoCad 2004DX I get a bitmap that seems
standard, and is readable in all the image applications I use - so I don't
really know what your issue is with that.
There is a quality issue though. The bitmap is reasonably sized for sending
via e-mail, but doesn't contain anywhere near the level of information the
original drawing did, and if you try to zoom in to see details you quickly run
out of useful resolution. PDF's may be slightly better, but not much.
If you have regular correspondants who need to study your drawings in detail,
pan and zoom and plot them as well, then I see no alternative to the Autodesk
applications (used to be whip, now its's dwf). I have not used this myself,
so it's only an assumption on my part that the application really does
everything I just said!! At least that's the way they advertise it.
If you want to get *really* simple though, just hit the "Print Screen" key on
your keyboard, and Windows stores a bitmap of your entire display, which you
can copy into your favorite application. Then just trim off everything around
your working view - the quality isn't really that far off what AutoCad gives
you anyway.
