CRT or LCD? |
|
|
I am researching the purchase of a new monitor and I was thought I'd ask this
group of CAD users for their recommendations for a good monitor.
I am looking for something in the range of 19"-22" size. I currently use a
resolution of 1024x768 on a 19" CRT monitor.
I want a very fine dot pitch - around 0.25mm would be best.
I'm beginning to suspect that an LCD screen may not deliver the same clarity as
CRT for text in AutoCAD but I'm confused about this so any first hand accounts
of LCD screens would be most helpful.
Also, how important is the contrast ratio on LCD screens? If this is just for
colour accuracy then Acad's 256 colours are not a primary consideration.

I'm using a Planar PX191 at 1280x1024 Native Mode.
I will never go back to CRT.

Same here. Our LCD monitors have much sharper images, area easier on
the eyes, have less glare, have more vivid color, and are much
brighter (it can be adjusted) than even our best CRT of similar size
in our office.

I'm not so sure.
I'm using both, and I agree the LCD seems sharper. But what is this perceived
sharpness? Working with the LCD, I can easily see the grid pattern which I do
not see (or I have to strain to see) on my Trinitron CRT. I'm wondering if
this pronounced grid pattern gives an impression of "sharpness", perhaps
without bringing any more information.
I am still haunted by my early days, working with a B/W 640X480 CRT. After a
few hours of work, if I went outside and looked at the sky, I would see the
grid pattern from my eye fatigue. When I see that sharp grid pattern on my
LCD, I get worried that the same phenomenon will happen again (though in
honesty, I cannot say this has happened).
OTOH - I can look at both screens with a magnifying glass, and the LCD is just
indisputably more defined, snappier and has better contrast. The Trinitron
image looks like it has blurry, vertical lines running through it. These
"smear" the picture lines into looking smooth, and mask the grid pattern. The
LCD has none of this, but a sharp, grid pattern, with scaling and
pixelisation, like a bitmap image. If I have both in use at the same time,
when I turn my head from the LCD to the CRT, I have a strong impression of a
"blurry" image.
So far, I'm sticking with the CRT, which I know and trust. I would love to
have something smaller and lighter on my desk, but I am not sure I want to
look at that pixel grid all day long.

Hi Gareth, my 19" crt popped a couple of weeks ago while working. Had to |
rush into town and buy the first 19" screen I could find. It happened to
be a 2 month old LCD on the dealer's desk at home. I figured if he was
using it for himself it was working ok.
It's not a fancy screen, also a bit slow ( 25ms ) and I've seen slightly
better ones in the store since my purchase. Basically I'm sitting with
a budget unit but so far I'm more than happy. Text / menues are crystal
sharp but the cad environment is a little more stepped ( jaggies ) than
the crt. I settled down with that vert quickly ... knowing that when
this lcd pops in about 4 years time I'll be getting another one. I don't
see myself ever going back to heavy glass again.
