I'm using windows xp, acad 2002 and an hp designjet 8500. I am unable to get the default paper setting to change. I can set any size and the first time anything else changes, the size goes back to tabloid. I need it to stay on 17X22.
Any help will be appreciated

Check id the problem occurs with you're designing with your base template or with existing drawing. In both case, the paper being selected is the one saved in the page setup. The default paper size specified in your plotter configuration is going to be choose a new layout creation.

You might have better luck getting your question read if you would make the
subject a bit more descriptive.
