I have AutoCAD 2002 & now AutoCAD 2005 on my machine.
We have all our machines pointing to one directory for support files. This is a mechanism in place for " standardizing & centralizing" .

Anyway ...
all of our PC3 file were made for 2002.
Now I have 2005 but the PC3 file I use for my Xerox Plotter doesn't work.

Do I have to make a new PC3 file with different name?
[ Xreox-2002.PC3 & Xerox-2005.PC3]

Or is there a way to make one PC3 file work for both?
[XEROX.PC3]

On another forum, someone said that ONE "PC3" file is enough I just have to use the migration tools. But this creates 2 files.

Can someone clarify this....?
Thanks in advance.

By the way ....
The big deal is .... we have 5 plotters .... 15 laser printers ... all the raster printers out there too.

So this means a lot of printers (PC3) would be on the list to choose from .... I'd like NOT to double my list since it's pretty full, now.

PC3 files are driver/OS and sometimes AUTOCAD version specific.

We all make separate sets for each variation we have, but keep them
centrally located.
I can see from the quantities how that could prove interesting in your
setup.

So ... you're saying "NO" ... one PC3 file for both versions is not possible. Right?

This is what I thought.

I don't know why this other guy says "YES" one PC3 file is possible .... hmmmmmm....

Anyone else with an opinion or response.
Thanks in advance.

We are currently using 2004 and the pc3s I created with 2002 still work fine
and occasionally we do use the 2002 platform with those same pc3 files. Not
sure what will happen when we go to 2005 though as we had to redo them from
2000i to 2002.

If you do have to do the two different sets simplify it a little as follows.
On your server (I assume this is where you keep them so that everyone uses
the same pc3 files) make a folder for plotting and in that folder have two
sub folders, 2002 and 2005. Create and place the respective pc3s in the
appropriate folder.

Now on the 2002 machines path them to the 2002 folder and on the 2005
machines path them to the 2005 folder. Doesn't save the pains of creating
them but at least this way each cad machine will only "see" 20 plotters
instead of 40 or so.

I think the main compatibilty problem we had may have been caused by OS
systems, are the 2005 machines a newer spec eg XP verses NT etc. We found
the single biggest hurdel to get all our machines to plot correctly and
identically was to move to "identical " machines all running Win XP. Now
anyone can plot a drawing and they look the same regardless of the machine
they were printed from, before that we had some serious differences.

Hope this helps.

Daniel.

Further more if you keep the pc3 the same name for the corresponding plotter
eg:

S:/Plotting/2002/pc3/XEROX.PC3 (for 2002)
S:/Plotting/2005/pc3/XEROX.PC3 (for 2005)

then you can have a saved page setup and use it from either a 2002 machine
or a 2005 machine. If you change their names every drawing with a saved
page setup will need to be redone, and some people won't take to kind to
that!

Thanks Dan!

You and I are on the same wavelength ....
I was thnking about the "pagesetup" ... too!

And that seems to be the alternate option to go for..

I just want a difinite confirmation that was the fact.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was so hung up on the response that it could be done ....
I've been on an endless quest to find this "Holy Grail" .... it apparently doesn't exist.... ;(
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks again for the input you guys.
Much appreciated.
