In 2004 we see that the .Documents.Open VBA method bypasses the missing font dialog box that one would normally see when a font resource is missing. The result is as if the Cancel button were selected for each missing font. Consequently text substitution does not occur. All text in that missing font becomes missing. Is there another way to open files from VBA without encountering this problem?

Have you considered setting the FONTALT system variable? That setting
dictates the default font to use when a missing font is encountered.

Well no .... but it is set to simplex.shx, which we have available. Once we respond to the missing font dialog during a conventional open then files opened with .Documents.Open in that session do have thier text.
