I know I can convert an HP 430 to a 450C by purchasing the Color Upgrade Kit, for a few hundred $. My question is, what does this kit consist of? Is it just ink cartridges? Does it even include the ink cartridges? Is there something else - tubes? Frame? Firmware? Is the result really completely equivalent to a 450C?

HP says there is no upgrade from 430 or 450C to 455CA, because "it is unlikely that an engineer will become a graphic artist. . ." I thought the 455CA was the same as the 450C with macintosh support and postscript. Am I wrong? Is there a difference in print quality?

HP's website tells you exactly what the color upgrade kit includes:

"C4718A
Color upgrade kit - Includes ink cartridges, firmware SIMM, driver software,
carriage label, front panel overlay, and instructions - Adds color
capabilities to the DesignJet 430"

As for quality, the 450C is not exactly an HP500 or an HP800, more like an
HP750C on a really good day with the moons aligned around Jupiter. All you
get is color lines capabilities with acceptable color fills for
non-photographic work.
Now whether the older short-lived-when-it-was-new 430 can make the leap,
I'll leave that to others. I personally would not sink $600.00 into an old
plotter.
