My company is getting ready to test the AutoCAD license manager (Acad 2005) in our network environment. We first have to test it in a lab environment and then, following approval, will move it to a production environment. Not having done this before, we are concerned that after loading our licenses in the test environment, we will lose them when we uninstall the software and move it to another server.

Has anyone done something like this before? Does anyone know how the process would work?

Also, when AutoCAD 2006 comes out , will we have to load a new version of the license manager, or will we be able to use the one from 2005 but just recharge its licences?

You will have to obtain new license files as they are based upon the MAC address of the server running the license manager. That is not difficult or time consuming.

I received a respoonse from Autodesk in another venue that said the license files could be "backed" up and then implemented on the new server. Is that a process you're familiar with?

My understanding of how the license manager works would require that you change the network card of the new server and install the network card of the server that you obtained the license files for.
Since the NIC's are generally built in to most new servers that becomes impossible.
It really isn't a big deal obtaining the files you need from Autodesk.
Have your reseller do it for you or call the product authorization center.
Talk to your reseller they can help.

With the Network License Activation Utility it only takes a minute to get a
new license file. Then you don't have to bother about changing network cards
and so on.
When 2006 is released you have to update the license manager files:
adskflex.exe, lmgrd.exe, lmtools.exe and lmutil.exe. It takes a minute to
do. Just stop the license service and copy these files from the CD to the
installation folder and start the service again.

Apart from the expansion of the borrowing feature, which you wrote
about in your blog, do you know of any new items in the 2006 licensing
scheme that we should be aware of?
