Programs for 3d Rendering |

I am quite proficient at 2D drawings for the homes I design but I'm finding
a greater need for 3D capabilities. Before I spend a lot of time teaching
myself AutoCAD 3D, can anyone suggest a program which might give me good
results which would be easier to learn. I need to be able to produce
brochure quality work, near photo-realistic. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Depending how much money you have Viz (Cheaper) or 3D Studio Max (More
Powerful) will do nicely. Coordinates work the exact same way and you can
make complex renderings with a little time and patience even if you know the
basics. Plus you can find many free 3D models on various sites to import
into renderings. The animation part is actually a little easier in Max than
Maya (Another Powerful Tool) but Maya is a little too powerful for
Architectural Renderings. Expect to pay a couple thousand dollars though
for any.

GMax by Discreet. Download for free registration I believe. Does 3d
renderings and is used by a lot of people for producing planes used in
Flight Sims. I have no idea how it would transfer with ACAD. It seems to
work a lot like 3D Studio. It's pretty impressive, but as I stated, unknown
about usability with acad.
It will import, *.3DS, *.PRJ, *.DFX, *.SHP
It will export, *.P3D
It will 'save as', *.GMAX

If you're comfortable with AutoCAD then your logical choice would be to go
with ADT (Autodesk's Architectural Desktop). It is essentially AutoCAD with
additional architectural 3D abilities built in (i.e. windows, doors, walls,
roofs, etc) ADT also now includes VizRender which is a modified version of
3DViz (the "baby brother" of 3D Max). ADT is designed to nicely link your
ADT dwg file into Viz and render. It's powerful enough to do
photo-realistic rendering and includes radiosity (IMO a must for realistic
rendering).
To see some samples of the work being done with VizRender (and regular Viz)
take a look at the autodesk newsgroups (Server: discussion.autodesk.com -
Group: autodesk.viz.vizions & Group:
autodesk.aec.arch-desktop.vizualization)
One thing to keep in mind is Autodesk's desire to "someday" get everyone to
switch to BMI like Revit. When Autodesk bought Revit there was a lot of
talk of them discontinuing ADT. So far that hasn't happened (and I hope it
doesn't) but at some point down the road they may pull the plug on ADT to
force migration to Revit. If you can't tell, I'm not a big fan of
Autodesk's policies but for the time being I use their products. A couple
years from now when Autodesk decides (for me) it's time for me to
"upgrade/update" I'll definitely be looking for something comparable from a
different company (IntelliCAD?? Chief Architect?? _______??).

I've been modeling in AutoCAD and then rendering in Accurender for years
now. So far I've managed to avoid learning 3D Studio, although that's about
to change. The advantage to this approach is twofold: first of all, you
already own and know AutoCAD, so it's just a question of learning to use
some additional ACAD commands (region, solid, 3dface, extrude, subtract,
union, etc.). Not that there isn't a fairly steep learning curve, it's just
that you've already invested considerable time in learning AutoCAD so
learning 3D AutoCAD isn't that big a leap. You're also saving the thousands
of dollars 3D Studio, Maya, etc. will cost you. You already own the program!
The second advantage to Accurender is ease of use. You can spend months
learning 3D Studio. I can show you have to use Accurender in 15 minutes,
assuming you already know some 3D modeling techniques. Applying textures is
a breeze and the program comes with enormous plants, lighting and materials
library. Accurender runs from within AutoCAD. It is also 1/6 the cost of 3D
Studio.
Downsides to this program are that it's considerably slower than 3D Studio,
it leaks memory like a sieve, it still has the odd bug, and it lacks object
animation capabilities. Worst of all in my opinion is that the company is in
the middle of beta testing the newest version of the program and is no
longer providing support like they should for the older version. However,
for $600 or so, you might find it a lot more useful and easier to learn than
3D Studio or Maya.

Marc,
Pretty nice looking stuff. Just two unsolicited pieces of advice:
1. Watch your tiling. Some of your materials tile very noticeably and
detract from the finished renderings (especially some of the residential
renderings). Also, occasionally there was some moiré on some of the images.
I'd guess this is caused by the size of the images being displayed (I'm sure
your original looks great). Neither of these items are earth shatteringly
bad, but correct them and the images would look their best.
2. Your site is nice though I found one annoying thing. In some of your
"galleries" the menu bar on the right has a "Previous" button but some of
them don't. When I browse a website I usually right-click to go back and
this doesn't work with flash. Sure it's a very minor annoyance but thought
I'd point it out.

Thanks for the compliments, Michael. A lot of the moire patterns is indeed
the result of shrinking a 24x36 rendering down to 800x600 dpi. The point is
about to become moot with me as I just accepted a full-time job (after five
years of consulting) with an architectural firm in Boston. One of the
requirements is that I learn 3D Studio, something I've been avoiding like
the plague for the past 15 years.. I was very up-front with them, told them
I'd used 3DS (to tweak VRML) but couldn't honestly say I knew how to use it.
They said that's OK, we'd rather train you to use the program using our
method anyway. I actually gave them ample opportunity to reject me
("Illustrator? Nah, I prefer CorelDraw"). I've had some weird
"bottomfeeding" type interviews lately--i.e., "We're not actually looking to
hire anyone, we just wanted to see what kind of talent is out there"--so I
went into this one with kind of an attitude. However, they were actually
more interested in my graphic design and other architectural illustration
skills and they offered me a job on the spot. Who am I to say no?
The difference between this situation and my last corporate job is that last
time they told me they preferred I worked exclusively for them, no sidework,
and I dutifully told my other clients I couldn't take in their jobs anymore.
Then I was unceremoniously dumped after a year and a half. This time I was
told the same thing, I said sure, and then contacted my
painstakingly-developed clientele and said "I'm still available for sidework
but you have to give me ample notice--no rush jobs." I'm afraid the days of
exclusive loyalty between employer and employee are over.

I also use AccuRender for some years now, and I cannot say I have noticed any
memory leaks. It does require time to render, and the time will be inversely
proportional to your processor speed. It takes advantage of two processors, so
if you have dual 3.2GHz processors you will render at 8X the speed of a
single, 800MHz processor.
I have rendered many drawings that required hours of rendering time. If the
program had memory leaks this would crash the machine. Never did.

As good a program as SketchUp is (it's not only for Architects), it's not a
rendering program.
But you can use its models as a start point for rendering in POV Ray.

I agree with you there Micheal about Autodesk's view about BIM.
I can tell you that the much touted BIM (Building Information Modeling)
strategy might not catch on the way Autodesk would like in architecture.
Because 99% of architecture are one of a kind projects and the time required
to fully model a building is prohibitive when the resultant model would not
be used again. 3d makes more sense for presentation purposes so ADT is fine.

If you're comfortable with AutoCAD then your logical choice would be to go
with ADT (Autodesk's Architectural Desktop). It is essentially AutoCAD
with
additional architectural 3D abilities built in (i.e. windows, doors,
walls,
roofs, etc) ADT also now includes VizRender which is a modified version
of
3DViz (the "baby brother" of 3D Max). ADT is designed to nicely link your
ADT dwg file into Viz and render. It's powerful enough to do
photo-realistic rendering and includes radiosity (IMO a must for realistic
rendering).
To see some samples of the work being done with VizRender (and regular
Viz)
take a look at the autodesk newsgroups (Server: discussion.autodesk.com -
Group: autodesk.viz.vizions & Group:
autodesk.aec.arch-desktop.vizualization)
One thing to keep in mind is Autodesk's desire to "someday" get everyone
to
switch to BMI like Revit. When Autodesk bought Revit there was a lot of
talk of them discontinuing ADT. So far that hasn't happened (and I hope
it
doesn't) but at some point down the road they may pull the plug on ADT to
force migration to Revit. If you can't tell, I'm not a big fan of
Autodesk's policies but for the time being I use their products. A couple
years from now when Autodesk decides (for me) it's time for me to
"upgrade/update" I'll definitely be looking for something comparable from
a
different company (IntelliCAD?? Chief Architect?? _______??).

the main target of Sketchup is surely the architectural area.
for rendering POV Ray is only the first choice if ease of use has no
priority, better use something more intuitive as e.g. the nicely
linked Artlantis render or Cinema 4D etc.
