I am looking to get a new monitor for work and not sure if I should get LCD
OR CRT type.
Here are a few concerts and questions.
1. Are LCD easier on the eyes then CRT monitor with 85Mhz refresh rate?
2. Are LCD recommended for AutoCAD use?
3. Will I have no glare with an LCD monitor (I have a window 10feet behind
my chair at work).
4. Right now I have a 4 year old Dell Trinitron 20" monitor which I like.
I have been told that CRTs give off radiation that can damage your eyes.

Thanks for the input.

If you like it, then don't change it until you need to.

Modern monitors like your Trinitron will cause you no harm, as far as I'm
aware.

It's the close work (eyes not being focused frequently on distant objects
and being too long focused on close object) that cause the eye to become
somewhat lazy, I suspect.

If you want to change, then I use a 17" TFT/LCD monitor that I find very
good for CAD, running at 1280x1024 True Color 32-bit.

I just got a Dell 20.1" LCD monitor with 1600x1200 res.
and I "LOVE" it... great for Autocad, easy on eyes and I will
never go back to CRT monitors.

Watch for deals on this monitor at:
http://www.slickdeals.net
which run them for about $600 - $700 with coupons and discounts...
thats how I got mine.

From my experience, yes.

I don't think there are any "official" recommendations either way.

Depends on the monitor. I tried a Sony that had a very reflective
bezel, and I saw every motion behind me in the bezel. It was so
distracting that I returned it. I've read that some LCD monitors have a
very reflective viewing area front surface. Be sure to evaluate silver
vs. black bezel, too.

Depends on the monitor.

LCD without any question, especially if you have high ambient lighting.
Here are a few concerts and questions.

That's a tough one to answer. I don't think even a much higher refresh

rate would make it easier on the eyes. What makes it easier on the eyes
is the lack of glare and absolute contrast and sharpness.

In my opinion, absolutely.
3. Will I have no glare with an LCD monitor (I have a window 10feet behind

You will have no glare and you will be one happy camper.
4. Right now I have a 4 year old Dell Trinitron 20" monitor which I like.
Trinitrons are nice, but when it comes to Autocad, there is simply no

comparison.

I struggled for years working with Autocad in an office so bright I

could see the rows of florescent lights constantly reflecting off the
monitor glass. As I would raise the brightness the monitor the image
would begin to bloom and make everything fuzzy. They were crap monitors
at work so I tried a Hitachi superscan 753 from home. It was better but
still not great. Someone lent me a 17" Samsung for the hell of it. At
first it looked like shit until I switched to native resolution. It got
a whole lot better. Then I saw wavy lines. The dick head at Samsung tech
support told me to load the driver. Turned out all I needed to do was
adjust the sync which is standard procedure for most all built in analog
input LCDs. It was looking real sweet, but the autocad icons were real
small. I went shopping for a 19" with larger pixel size. After trying
just about everything in the stores I kept coming back to the Samsungs
for sharpness and contrast. They were even better then the more
expensive Sonys. I didn't give a crap about ghosting since watching
videos and playing games is kind of frowned upon at work. My advice is
go for the LCD for autocad, you won't regret it. Don't select one based
on specs. The specs mean absolutely nothing. Burn a copy of the Nokia
screen tester to a CD and bring it with you into the stores. You can
download it here
ftp://ftp.fluidlight.com/pub/nospin_files/Nokia.zip
Compusa and Circuitcity had absolutely no problem letting me run it off
the CD to test all of the LCD monitors simultaneously. Don't even waste
your time with Bestbuy, they couldn't even turn off the satellite feed
to their pcs. To do a true test you have make sure they are all running
in their native resolution. Otherwise the software interpolate the
pixels and the text looks fuzzy. The most telling test is the fine print
display. It will show how sharp the image is throughout the entire area
of the display. Also, you have to go through and make sure they are
syncronized correctly if you are trying the analog input. Usually the
autoset works, but not always. Samsung calls their syncronization Image
lock and Sony calls it Phase/pitch.

I have a Dell 20" LCD which i upgraded to from a Benq 17" LCD. Once you
have an LCD you will not go back (if you have a choice ....$$$$$).

The only issue to remember is that the monitor needs to be run at its
maximum resolution so there is no pixel interpolation. The Dell is 1600 x
1200 so you will also need a reasonable graphics card.

I also play games on my PC (at l;east I admit to it) so I needed a high
refresh rate ... not a problem with only CAD unless you are doing 3D
walkthroughs. This is where the Dell is also quite good and the Benq
excellent.

Cheers
