Autocad network problem |
|
|
I teach Autocad and I just got 2 new computers. They have Windows XP. When my students try to save to their H:/ drive which is on the schools network it wont save. It sais its unable to save drawing to H:\Floorplan.dwg drawing saved to H:\savad36d.ac$. and even though it sais it saved as a different name it still doesnt save. I have other computers with windows98 and windows2000 that will save fine. Is this a problem with autocad or the schools network?

Sounds like a Windows problem to me. What operating system does the
server run? Our network works fine with Win2K on the work stations and
a Linux server, but we had trouble getting XP to work reliably. It's
been long enough that I don't remember the specifics, just the frustration.

One of the problems with Windows XP, is that it is not user friendly when trying to network. Even if you set the permissions, you still cannot access areas like PROGRAM FILES, DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS, and WNNT.
Another problem is that you need to create a networking floppy and load it into the Windows 98 and Windows 2000 system.
When I had my business I gave up trying to get around this problem and gave my customers a rebate just to switch to Windows 2000. Never had a problem afterwards. I felt this was far cheaper than fighting Microsoft and I could help my other customers than spend all of my time making something work that is not designed to work.
