EXT is the shortcut command for extrude.

Are you certain that the object you're trying to extrude is a 2D polyline or is it a 3d polyline?

Not sure you can extrude a 3D pline except along the PATH formed by the pline segments.
Check the value of DELOBJ variable just in case you want to save the "original" object.

Pedit the lines together would give you a shape to extrude. Not sure if join
will allow you to make an illegal object or not. It needs to be a closed
planer object, nothing 3d. Join creates polylines it seems, should work,
make sure it is closed.
