No grid? |

I can set a grid anywhere in a NEW drawing, but not in an existing one. In an existing drawing, it will allow a grid only in paper space. In model space I get a "grid too dense to display" message no matter my density settings. Is there a setting I have missed?

"Grid too dense to display" means basically that you are zoomed out too far for AutoCad to display the grid. Grids usually start at the 0,0 point and extend in an X and Y-axis direction to the specified limits, whatever they might be. If you've never reset the limits, I think the default is x=9", y=12".
To "find" the grid origin from a zoom extents view, start the line command and select 0,0 as the start point, draw it long enough to be seen in this view then zoom in tight on the line start point. If the grid is on , it should display.

LIMITS command, change the settings when prompted to encompass your entire
drawing.

Or you have some scrap ( or something else ) looong away in space, so that
small grid space cannot be shown.
