I have a set of drawings that all have the same group of blocks in them, all of which need to be re-defined. Rather than having to re-define the group of blocks repeatedly for each drawing, I'd like to re-define them once and then apply the new block properties to each drawing.

I tried to do this by creating another drawing that had all of the blocks in it, though re-defined. Then I tried to insert this drawing into one of the drawings with blocks that hadn't been re-defined and got the message "duplicate definitions of blocks ignored". Is there a way to get ADAC not to ignore the duplicate block definitions and choose the new definitions? Or some other way to accomplish my goal?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

A block is an entity. Inserting a drawing with your updated blocks is intuitively a good idea but AutoCad "sees" the inserted drawing as a single block and reported it ignored the duplicates. Dumb program, ain't it?

Maybe some wizard has a shortcut answer but I would have to insert the revised blocks one-by-one because I just don't know of any slick way of doing it.

Someone has probably solved this with a LISP routine; if they see your post, they'll probably be able to help you out.

What happens when you insert the OLD DWG into the NEW DWG... do the OLD
blocks update?

Good one, that worked for my test.

Like Tracy said, reverse your process.

Your current file settings override the settings of the drawing you are
importing: AutoCAD has always worked like that. This works for blocks,
dimstyle settings, layer settings, linetypes and so much more.

Not sure it qualifies as 'dumb program' since most of use do not want our
blocks or anything else change/ updated every time we bring something
not-so-new in ;)

Dumb program in the context that it does exactly what it's told to do, nothing more.

Now why didn't I think of that?! Thank you, Tracy! And everyone else for your input
