I was working with a drawing in which was not backed up, but I did save very often. Drawing was almost completed and I was putting the finishing touch to it. I had imported the drawing and had added many hours of work to it. I was trying to edit some text information of the property's legal description. I could not modify the text with AutoCAD, so I believed that the text might have been imported to the drawing originally from a word processing program such as Word. I then attempted to copy and paste the text data to a Word file so that I could edit and return the text information back to the drawing as corrected. However, when I tried to copy the text AutoCAD created a Pop Up Window that said something to the effect "that AutoCAD and I had created a fatal error and that AutoCAD was now going to shut down, but I could save all my work up until the point of my last save by clicking the yes (or OK, I can't remember which one)". I clicked to save and it shut down AutoCAD and went to the Windows screen. I then went back into AutoCAD attempting to open the drawing file, but I could not open it. It told me I would need to excess it through AutoCAD drawing recovery, which I tried. It the
n gave me another Pop Up Window "AUTOCAD TEXT WINDOW" with the following message: "The instruction at "0x73dd1351" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "Read". Click on OK to terminate the program." Anybody got any thoughts? Can the drawing be recovered or do I need to spend the time and energy in starting a new drawing and regularly backing it up? Help!

You may get lucky and be able to open the last x.bak file by renaming it to
dwg (after deleting/renaming the last saved file.) Next try posting it to
customer files and see if someone else has any luck recovering it.

If your AutoCAD's system variable ISAVEBAK is set to 1, then there is a file
with a BAK extension (Back-Up) which gets created whenever you do a SAVE or
QSAVE. You might have to make sure Windows Folder options allow you to see
file extensions (not knowing what Operating System you have)

If you AutoCAD's system variable ISAVEPERCENT is set to 0, then the BAK file
and previously saved version of the DWG file are equal. (read: 2 QSAVES and
they are the same, except for their filename's extension).

You might want to run RECOVER or AUDIT on the problemed file, and quite
possibly you had OLE objects that were either linked or embedded into
AutoCAD (if linked possibly you have lost the link or the folder/files have
moved, etc).

As KDC poted, if you cannot recover/audit the file, try ZIPping it up and
post as an attachment in the Customer Files area and maybe some kind person
will try and recover it for you.

Customer Files is an area for upload of problem files for review or sharing.
Users are asked to zip any files prior to uploading to conserve download
time and server space.

The File Attachments discussion group can be accessed in either of the
following ways:

By HTTP (web-based) interface at

Hope this helps

If you have not recover your drawing... have you tried
to search for *.ac$ files (if you had an auto-save option on)
with the date of loss (search option)?

Message that may help for kjmorton14 problem: I am running Windows XP operating system. I went into search with the file name of my drawing. It came back with lots of "Hits" on that file name. Some were the file name plus the extension .bak, bk1, and .dwg. I picked the bk1 extension with the date and time just prior to the crash, changed the extension name to .dwg and it opened. Maybe this will help and please bare in mind that I am telling you this from memory, so I hope I told you correctly what I did. Note: I might have just got lucky!
