We are about to upgrade a Microstation seat and the licensing issue is very
confusing. I could use some help, and would appreciate any reply. Here is
our current situation:

- We own 2 licenses of MSJ v7.1
- We are in the Select program and manage the licenses with SelectServer 7.1

We would like to upgrade one of the two licenses to v8.1. I know this means
we will have to update our SelectServer to v8 but beyond that it gets
confusing. Specifically:

- Since we are a member of the Select program, the upgrade to Microstation
v8.1 is free, correct?
- Assuming it is free, once I download it and install it, do I need to get a
new license.lic file?
- Once we have upgraded, will we still be able to run v7.1 on two computers
or will one of them always have to be v8.1?

Thanks so much for any help. It will save us a lot of time.

I hope someone else can confirm this because I'm not absolutely sure:-

1. It is free - well, included in your Select subscription.
2.You will need to have new server license file.
3. Presumably, as your client license is just a text file with "SERVER =
servername".... then this will work for V8 as well. It just has to be called
msv8.lic instead of msj.lic.
4. V8 installs, by default into "c:\program files\bentley", and J to
"c:\bentley", so they will co-reside by default and either can be used.

Hope I am correct and this helps

I believe this is correct. We've upgraded our licenses to V8 some
time ago, and they still allow J to run

You do need to upgrade you select server software to an 8.x version.
But I also believe, if you want to be able to run J and V8, you need a
new license file, but to keep your licenses at J. I'm pretty sure, if
you upgrade to V8 licenses, J will not run.

We are still running J licenses with Select Server 8.2.something and
also our InRoads and Cloudworx from V7 licenses, until we are 100%
transitioned to V8 - something that is still off in the distance, due
to client and project needs.

We unfortunately have to. We are going to be acquiring and using Geopak
Survey, and it requires MS 8.
