When you're saving the generic, all family members are saved as

well. In the same generic part file.

To save the members of a generic to individual files, do the following:
Open each instance into memory. (on my system I am limited to 15 open
windows)
Open the generic.
Delete the open instances from the family table that have been opened.
Save the Generic.
Save the ex-instances as individual parts.

From my understanding, when the generic is saved, only the generic
part file will be shown/created in the working directory (when
browsing using window explorer).

But I need to "export"/save the family instances into individual part
files. The current method that i'm using is to open each family
instance and perform a saveas copy. This method would be useful if
there are only a few instances.

If there a faster way or a functionality in ProE to complete the task
that i need?

I use Ben's methodology too. If you have assembly and/or 2-D drawing objects
that reference the instances that you are wanting to break free from their
generic parent, you'll want to retrieve these assembly and drawing objects
into session first. Then after you've performed the steps that Ben has
described to you in his post, activate each assembly and drawing object
window and File-Save. This will allow you to retrieve the assembly and
drawing objects successfully in subsequent sessions of Pro/E.
NOTE: This process gets even more complicated if the instances and other
Pro/E objects have already been submitted to a Pro/PDM or Pro/INTRALINK
database folder.

S.T.

OK. I missunderstood your question.
I have no better idea then the one suggested in other replies.

ah I wouldn't so it that way
I would open the family table and open every instance so that there in
session
in the generic, delete the family table
save each individual part (which were instances) to hard drive
now you have broken out each instance to a stand alone part
