AutoCAD TIP: Getting a grip |
|
|
I recently went to one company and they had them turned off (GRIPS set to
0)... Hello?
Grips are good... I have more reasons (and tips) why to use grips... here
are just a few.
First a couple of assumpions, SNAP=OFF, GRIPS=1
THE TIP: A Variable Offset using Grips
Start a new drawing. Draw one vertical line. Select that line (the grips are
cold, the line is highlighted). Select the middle grip (makes it hot)...
Right-click and select Copy (or simply type in C[enter])
Now turn on ORTHO (or use POLAR TRACKING) pull away to the right (0
degrees).
Simply type in a distance... like 1[enter] 2[enter] 5[enter] 1.5[enter]
this is an offset, but at whatever distance you desire.
BONUS TIP...
Do the same as above but now try a smaller distance like 0.5... now while
the grip is still hot, hold he shift key down and notice that your cursor
will be snapping in 0.5 increments. You can change the distance and then
reuse the shift key and the cursor will snap to the new increment.

Tracy,
Your bonus tip was another I didn't know. Thanks.

One of the quickest ways to copy stair treads. You can key-in @10,7.5, hold the shift down and pop in a handful of treads in a second.

Interesting. I usually rotate the UCS and use array.

| So did I, until GRIPS. Getting the array right always required more "fiddling" than I wanted to do. |

Not really - number of rows, angle and distance between treads. |

| Quick, what's the angle and distance between treads that are 9.5" long by 8" rise? |

You don't need to calculate the angle. Use
UCS 3P. Assuming the stair goes up to the
right, choose the bottom of the riser for the origin,
the top right of the tread for the x (or @9.5,8) and somewhere
above for the y. Then -ar pick pick return r 1 <risercount> pick
top right of tread return boom. Then while you're in
that ucs, you can draw the railing and other stair
stringer lines.
I do admit you do have to interact more but its a bit faster.
The old copy multiple command with osnaps also does a good job.
Thanks again for the grips tip.

Re: AutoCAD TIP: Getting a grip |

Okay step me through this on. I have one tread on the screen, and I've rotated the ucs to match that stair angle.
you lost me with:
"Then -ar pick pick return r 1 <risercount> pick top right of tread return boom."
How does picking the "top right of tread" return the distance between nosing points? |
