Problem with PDM works |
|
|
Hi Everyone
We are having a huge problem using PDM works at our work place. We are using PDM works 2006. Every time we check out an assembly, we are having all sorts of problems. Some times it says it cannot find a part or the assembly will open with lot of mating issues.
I looked at all the sub-assemblies in the Vault and saw that we have one part with different part numbers (part1, Part1, part_1) and also few parts have the part number and description in the part name. I think this happened because they did not follow specific rules while naming the parts and this led to having different versions of the same part. We are thinking to come up with a method to solve this problem.
I would really appreciate any kind of help in solving this problem.
Thank you in advance
Ravi

Ravi,
I think your problem stems from your parts not having and sharing one unique name, which will need to be changed before trying to fix this issue. Adopting a numbering system is the best way to go, also avoid using a revision letter or number in the part name (it defeats the purpose of using PDMWorks). You can however change the references of parts used within a particular assembly. For instance if you open assembly A and want part B to be used instead of part B1 then you can change the reference to open part B for that assembly.
The best way I know to do this is to have the parts you want to be used in the assembly checked into your local vault area. Then click the Open button and browse to the assembly in question, but don't open it just yet. In the open dialog box there is a "References..." button. With the assembly highlighted click the "References..."button. There you will be able to click the parts in question and re-reference them to the assembly. Once they are re-referenced to the new parts you can open the assembly and fix any mate issues, etc. and then check it back into PDMWorks. This may be a difficult process to go through but worthwhile to maintain the correct references to parts. If you need any further assitance with this process please re-post to this thread and I will try to discuss things more in detail.
Best Regards,
Jon |

Problem with PDM works |
|
|
Hi Jon
Thank you for your reply. We have a numbering system for all our parts. We even have part numbers for all our fasteners too. But the problem is that few members included even the description of the file in the part number (Eg: C000755 SHCS M4 X 10). Then some one else who worked on an assembly which contained this part modified the part number to C000755 SHCS, M4 X 10. So now we have two versions of the same part in PDM works. There are few hundred parts like this. Because of this, we are having problem when we check out an assembly. It will open with mating errors and few missing parts. I am also not sure wheather we are having this problem beacuse of the above reason.
I really appreciate any help.
Thank you
Ravi
