What is the typical pay rate for an animation? It is not
photorealistic, mostly just to illustrate a proposed machining
approach. TIA

Same rate as for design. Why should it be different?

It's part of the job now.

My main customer usually asks for this for working out the machine sequence.

And it's the fun bit.
