Hi All,

I see that nomachine NX and freeNX could be an interesting option for
telework, but the thing is rather complicated to configure. I could use
some opinions/experiences. And of course I would like to know how well
it performs with dfII and its graphics (virtuoso , awv).

I found it working quite well. Even though i had it crashing sometimes, which can be
quite annoying. Setup is not this hard, once you get a correct tutorial...
if i may help you with it, as far as my memory can serve, don't hesitate.

I want to install freenx on solaris, with dtlogin/CDE. I did not find
binaries, nor dtlogin integration manual. If you have any tutorials I am a taker...
Do you get X crashes from dfII or from any application ?

i have no experience with doing this on solaris, but it should be no more problem.
i found that the hard part was to setup authentication. the mechanism is rather strange,
you have to have a nx user which must be able to authenticate via public key. you'll have to create
a key pair and distribute the public one to all the clients. the client logs via this user
and then authenticates the real user via password.

hum, don't remember where those tutorial were, but i'll have a look.

about the crashes, they really seemed random. no direct relation to dfII, hopefully.

How does it work, compared with vnc?
Running cadence remotely (DSL) via vnc is a bit too slow.
Does freenx improve this siginificantly?

I run cadence over ica at work and I'm not very much impressed.
I run cadence over tarantella from home on a DSL 768kB downlink 128kB
uplink connection and it is slower than ica at work, but not
significantly slower. (I think that ICA is used over that tarantella
stuff, but I haven't found out really) Which means that ICA is good on
narrow communication links.

I have not been able to use NX from home vs. the servers at work for
reasons probably obvious to any paranoid system administrator, but not
understandable for an engineer who want to play. :-)

If you play some more, you can probably use ssh to forward the NX traffic over
an allowed port. I don t find these things so much fun any more. All internet
technologies have grown too fast. So, if you document your experiences on some
website or blog, please tell.

There are also some reasons obvious to a paranoid sysadmin why he would want
to avoid tarantella ...oh no, not any more... They are now with the good guys ;)
